This modifier indicates that the claim pertains to a durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS) item being billed for the first time. It is specifically used for capped rental items and parenteral enteral nutrition (PEN) pumps during the initial rental month. Note that this modifier is not required for capped rental purchases with a date of service on or after October 1, 2018.
